Hitting the farmer's market makes it fun! They are usually held at local parks so the kids can run and play. Meet friends there also to make it a social trip to talk about recipes, plans for the week and other ideas to get healthy! When its not farmer's market season, hit any local produce store or department at the grocery store. If you do shop at a large grocery store, stay in the outer perimeter -- produce and frozen food. Some tricks:
- If it has a nutrition label with more than 3 ingredients, it's most likely a processed food and you should avoid these as much as possible
- Frozen foods are your friends!! Not only do they last longer in your home, most of the time they are cleaned and chopped for you already! They are also frozen when picked so in most cases, they retain their nutritional value better than the fresh items that have been shipped thousands of miles to your town!
- Bring your kids! The more involved they feel in the process, the more likely it is that they will help with the cooking and the more likely they are to try something new!!
- Most of all -- don't forget to bring your reusable bags!
